I saw god again today
beyond thought, somewhere. Where else?
Not in the analytics of lights
or the measurements of sounds,
or the punctual dead leaf dallying in cold space.
It was not a he nor a she nor a they
nor animal nor flesh nor pure anything,
but it did have the look of a figure,
a figure all aflame, a figure without
border or texture save the heat.
Beyond it there was nothing.
Within it there was everything.
Some pagan knows this story,
some pagan who lifts a rock
and screams out something
not sensible but profound,
something formless like the god.
I started to write on such matters,
but I had no hand.
I strained to see something,
but I had no eyes.
I thought I heard it
in the cool of the day,
in a garden,
but I had no ears and wanted none.
Had no senses and wanted none.
Just to be aware of some other space entirely
where spirits and sprites reside,
in the shallow cool nothingness,
void, timeless, infinite,
as though the word itself
were hard to pronounce
because there was only a feeling,
all just a sense
that had no sense to it,
no volume, no proportion, no time, no duration,
just an is at the heart,
near the heart,
the heart.
I saw God again today.
